NOTICE: This course is scheduled to be retired at midnight on Friday, May 30, 2025. Enrollment for this course will close on Thursday, May 15, at 11:59 p.m. ET. All participants must complete the required coursework, pass all quizzes/posttests with an 80% or higher, and submit an evaluation survey before Friday, May 30, at midnight to earn CE credit and receive a certificate.

Course Description

Intergenerational programs purposefully bring younger and older people together with the goal of benefitting everyone involved. They have been used to support youth and older adult development and health, building on the talents of participants of all ages and abilities. Successful intergenerational programs depend on thoughtful planning, practice, and assessment grounded in evidence.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the potential benefits and special considerations of intergenerational programs.
  • Identify different dimensions of intergenerational programs.
  • Reflect on your reasons for exploring intergenerational programs and start developing an intergenerational action plan.

Module 2:

  • Identifying, exploring, and committing to a partnership
  • Developing an intergenerational program mission, objectives, timeline, and budget
  • Crafting an action plan that reflects dimensions of intergenerational programming

Developed by Shannon E. Jarrott, PhD

Professor of Social Work, The Ohio State University

Shannon E. Jarrott, Ph.D. is a professor of social work at The Ohio State University. Trained as a gerontologist, she specializes in intergenerational strategies to meet community needs and understand their impact. She works closely with intergenerational scholars and practitioners globally, including the Extension system. Her translational research, sponsored by non-profit, state, and federal funders, has been recognized with regional, national, and international honors. Inspired by close intergenerational family relationships, Shannon aims to support the health of current and future older adults by fostering positive intergenerational ties.

Jill Juris, PhD

Assistant Professor of Recreation Management, Appalachian State University

Jill Juris, Ph.D. is an assistant professor in the Department of Recreation Management and Physical Education in the Beaver College of Health Sciences at Appalachian State University. Her research focuses on developing, implementing, and evaluating community-based programs to improve the health outcomes of older adults. Specifically, she examines impacts of community recreation such as intergenerational programming and leisure-time physical activity of older adults. She also aims to decrease the social isolation and loneliness of older adults through intergenerational technology programs in higher education settings.

Rachel M. Scrivano

Doctoral Candidate, College of Social Work, The Ohio State University

Rachel M. Scrivano, MS is a current Ph.D. student in the College of Social Work at The Ohio State University. Her research interests largely focus on the impact of incorporating intergenerational contact and gerontological education in reducing ageism and increasing inclusivity among community members. She is a current graduate research assistant for the intergenerational and community-based participatory action research project Food for a Long Life under the guidance of both Dr. Jarrott and Dr. Juris.

Course Completion Requirements

  • Participants must complete all coursework requirements and pass all module/quiz posttests in addition to submitting an evaluation survey to earn CE credit and a certificate.
  • Partial credit is not permitted for this course. 
  • The projected time for completion of this self-paced hybrid asynchronous distance learning course is 2.5 hours based on input from social workers in the development process.  
  • The course is divided into 3 modules that all include reading-based materials as well as externally linked webpages, with a 10-question posttest to be completed at the end of each module.  
  • Participants are required to score 80% or higher to pass the module quizzes. Unlimited attempts are allowed.  
  • The evaluation survey will be immediately available once the required coursework and quizzes are finished, and must be completed to receive CE credit.  
  • The CE certificate will be available for download once the evaluation survey is submitted. 

Certificates & CE Reporting

The CE certificate will be available for download in the ScarletCanvas-Catalog Learning Platform once the evaluation survey is submitted. Participants will also receive an automated email from ScarletCanvas-Catalog at notifications@instructure.com containing a link to download the certificate within 24-hours of completion. Ensure you have this email address marked as a safe sender to receive communications from ScarletCanvas-Catalog.

Hours for those with Ohio licenses that are submitted with the evaluation survey will be reported to CE Broker every 14 days (twice per month).
