Course Description 

This 2-hour, self-paced course is designed to build a comprehensive understanding of addiction, explore the criteria for assessment and diagnosis of substance abuse, and define levels of treatment. The course may be applied to the professional certificate program, "Building Addiction Knowledge for Frontline Workers".

This course was developed in February 2020.

Learning Objectives

  • Summarize the history of opioid misuse in the US and the causes of the ongoing opioid epidemic
  • Identify how discoveries in neuroscience are changing perspectives on addiction
  • Explain the definition of addiction in accordance with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM)
  • Identify key elements in the diagnosis of substance use disorders
  • List the basic terminology used to describe the fundamentals of addiction treatment

  • Course Format & Completion Requirements
    • This course is asynchronous with reading and video-based modules. Participants will view recorded videos and read materials provided from within each module, as well as externally linked webpages. To receive credit, participants must complete all required coursework, pass all quizzes and posttests by at least 80%, as well as submit an evaluation. The evaluation will be available once all quizzes and posttests are passed.
  • Certificate & Reporting 
    • Once your evaluation/feedback survey is submitted, ScarletCanvas-Catalog will generate your CE certificate/certificate of attendance for download and/or print. You will also receive an automated email from ScarletCanvas containing a link to download your certificate within 24 hours of completion. 
    • CE hours will be reported to CE Broker within 30-days for OCSWMFTB and OCDP Treatment licensees who provide their full license numbers with their course evaluation/feedback survey.

The Ohio State University College of Social Work, (Provider: RCST111747), is an approved provider for The State of Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist (OCSWMFT) Board. 

The Ohio State University College of Social Work, (Provider: 50-24068), is an approved provider for The Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals (OCDP) Board.

The Ohio State University College of Social Work, (Provider: 1628), is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. OSU College of Social Work maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 4/30/22-4/30/25. Social workers completing this course receive two (2) continuing education credits.

      • If you experience issues with the CAPTCHA (I’m not a robot verification) upon registration, we have found it resolves itself when using a current Chrome browser.
  • Set up messages from Instructure/ScarletCanvas-Catalog at notifications@instructure.com as a trusted/whitelisted email address in your email contacts, so that our messages/announcements aren't routed to your Junk/Spam folder. 
    • Messages sent to you via this system will list Instructure/Canvas Catalog as the Sender, not OSU CSW.
  • If you are licensed by The State of Ohio CSWMFT and CDP Boards, please be sure to enter your full license number in the Professional License Information field upon registration and when completing the training evaluation.
  • After you enroll you will receive two automated emails, one with the subject "Please confirm your email address - Ohio State ScarletCanvas." Use the link in that email to set up the password you would like to use for your account.
