Course Description

This is a virtual event.

“Racial microaggressions are brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults toward people of color.” (Sue, et al., 2007).

Many of us have learned and talked about microaggressions in various settings, but what about in the therapy space? What happens when we commit a microaggression towards our client? What happens when our client commits a microaggression towards us? Is it always ok to address the client directly? Is it ever ok? What are the negative impacts of microaggressions on treatment outcomes? What can administrators do to ensure the best service to our communities? How do we address the microaggressions embedded in our policies and procedures?

We will discuss these questions and more and begin to process how to manage microaggressions based on race and other aspects of identity when they emerge during our work with clients/patients—from the first contact to the therapeutic space.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify both overt and covert microaggressions.
  2. Illustrate knowledge of ways to address microaggressions with a client/patient and distinguish when it is therapeutically appropriate to do so.
  3. Discover methods to prevent, and identify ways to be mindful of, microaggressions at the policy level, thereby improving access to and experience with mental health services provided to the communities that they serve.
  4. Reflect on, and be able to summarize, how their own biases and backgrounds affect their clinical work with clients/patients from demographic groups that are similar to and different from their own racial/ethnic/cultural/religious/gender/sexual orientation backgrounds.
