Welcome to the Opiate Use Disorder, Medication Assisted Treatment, and Recovery Oriented Systems of Care and Recovery Supports module. In this module, we will look at how opioid use disorder (OUD) is defined and what opioid addiction.  

During this training we will discuss the opioid crisis and initiatives that are in place to help combat the crisis.  You will learn how medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is used to treat substance use disorders as well as sustain recovery and prevent overdose.  You will have the opportunity to examine different types of medications used for medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for treatment of opioid use disorder. Lastly, in this module you will learn about Recovery Oriented Systems of Care and Recovery Supports and how community-based services and support builds on the strengths and resilience of individuals, families, and communities to achieve improved health, wellness, and quality of life for those with or at risk of opioid use disorder. Throughout this module, you will be presented with multiple choice and true and false knowledge checks to test your mastery of the content.

Participants must participate in each learning activity (listen, watch, do), pass the post test and submit course evaluation to qualify for nursing contact hours.

The Ohio State University College of Nursing is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Although this course is eligible for RN/CHW CEs only, social workers are welcome to enroll and complete this course for free CEs.

Course Objectives

  • Define opioid use disorder (OUD).
  • Recognize the purpose of Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and compare the medications Buprenorphine, Methadone, and Naltrexone as it is used in opioid use disorder.
  • Define Recovery Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC) and Recovery Supports
  • Define the concept of harm reduction
  • Explore harm reduction strategies for use in practice
