Course Description:

This self-paced course has been created to help participants learn to support their LGBTQ+ clients by better understanding the ethical obligation that social workers have to advocate for and be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community. This course will help increase your knowledge about the LGBTQ+ community and understand how to develop safe spaces for clients who identify as LGBTQ+. It is our hope that you will become a more informed and effective ally to the LGBTQ+ community.

Learning Objectives:

• Participants will understand the ethical obligation social workers have of advocating for and being an ally to vulnerable populations such as the LGBTQ+ community.
• Participants will learn about the LGBTQ+ community and how to develop safe spaces for clients who identify as LGBTQ+.
• Participants will become more informed and effective allies to the LGBTQ+ community.

Meet Your Presenters

Angie Fry, MSW, LISW-S is a graduate of The Ohio State University. Angie began her career working with women and children who were victims of domestic violence. She then transitioned to work with Catholic Social Services as a home clinician working with families involved with the families involved with the child protective services; as an individual couple's and group counseling clinician and finally as the Clinical Supervision of the Family Stengthening Division. The bulk of Angie's work has focused on trauma and abuse. Currently Angie is an Assistant Professor in the Social & Human Services program at Columbus State Community College.

Jorie Schwartz, MSW, LISW-S is a licensed social worker in Columbus, OH. She is a graduate of the MSW program at The Ohio State University and has worked primarily in areas of community mental health and school-based prevention. She has worked as a field coordinator for the College of Social Work at OSU and is now what she describes as her "dream job" as an Assistant Professor in th Social and Human Services at Columbus State Community College. She has managed many programs and has supervised staff and students for the most of her career.
