Course Description

This is a virtual event with limited capacity. When you register, a virtual spot will be held for you. If you decide to join us in-person instead, please drop this course from your Student Dashboard so your spot can be given to someone else.

This session will operate from the understanding that the United States has always been a racialized society. As such, participants will explore the nature and statuses of their own racial identity development and its relevance to delivering culturally competent health and human services. Race is examined as a social construct and its intersection with other forms of diversity (gender, sexual orientation, religion/spirituality, language preference, nationality, etc.) will be explored. The session is designed to be highly interactive.

Learning Objectives

1. Understand the nature of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) by examining the intersection of its many facets (e.g., race, gender, sexual orientation, religion/spirituality, language preference, nationality, etc.).

2. Explain the nature of race as a social construct and its influence on organizational culture and interactions with clients/patients.

3. Explore and understand the impact of racial identity development and the statuses of White racial consciousness.

4. Identify and discuss personal narratives about race for self-reflection and continued development of healthy racial consciousness and client/patient interactions.
