Course Description
Learning Objectives
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify common activating stimuli for behavioral outbursts in addiction treatment settings.
- Identify de-escalation techniques tailored to individuals facing self-regulation challenges.
- Develop effective communication strategies to defuse tense situations and build rapport with clients.
Course Outline
Asynchonous time determined based on original event held via live webinar. Adapted to be self-paced. Video length is 2:53:13 and covers:
- Challenging judgments around behavioral dysregulation
- Defining escalating behaviors and identifying causes
- Setting the stage for preventing escalation
- Responding effectively to escalation
- Specific techniques for de-escalation
Course Completion Requirements
- Participants must submit a pre-course survey, complete all coursework requirements, and pass the course post-test with a score of at least 80%. Unlimited attempts are allowed.
- The post-course evaluation survey will be immediately available once the required coursework and post-test are finished, and the evaluation must be completed to receive CE credit.
- The CE certificate will be available for download once the evaluation is submitted.

Daniel King, LCDCIII, completed an associate of applied science in mental health/addiction studies/developmental disabilities at Columbus State Community College. After working in direct care for several years, he resumed his formal education to earn a bachelor of science in substance abuse counseling at University of Cincinnati. King is currently a graduate student of social work, previously served as part of the staff at the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board, and identifies as a person in long-term recovery from addiction and mental health challenges. King has experience in direct care, supervision, program development, quality assurance and improvement and professional development. He served as client rights officer at one of Central Ohio's largest SUD treatment organizations.
Michael Gersz, LPCC-S, LICDC-CS, Director of Outpatient Services at Maryhaven
Michael Gersz, LPCC-S, LICDC-CS, has worked in the behavioral health field for over 14 years and currently holds the license of LPCC-S and LICDC-S. He currently serves as the director of outpatient services at Maryhaven. He received his undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University, majoring in criminology and sociology, and received his graduate degree from the University of Dayton in clinical mental health counseling. Gersz received his advanced chemical dependency certificate from Columbus State Community College and currently serves as an adjunct instructor at CSCC in the Social Work and Human Services Department.
Continuing Education Approvals
- This course is approved for 3 CE hours for Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage and Family Therapists, as well as Substance Use Counselors for 2 hours in domain C2 and 1 hour in domain C3 in the state of Ohio.

Certificates & CE Reporting
The CE certificate will be available for download in the ScarletCanvas-Catalog Learning Platform once the evaluation survey is submitted. Hours for those with Ohio licenses that are submitted with the evaluation survey will be reported to CE Broker every 14 days (twice per month).
Please note: You may only complete this course ONE time for CE credit. You are welcome to access a course again to revisit content while it is open, but you will only receive one certificate and credit for Ohio licensees will only be reported to CE Broker one time for your completion of this particular course.
