Full course description

Course Description

This free, 2-hour training features one module with an edited recording of a live CareLine Development Training series session that was first held as a Zoom Webinar on November 3rd, 2022.

Please Note: This course will be open until June 30, 2023

In an ideal workplace, diversity is embraced rather than tolerated, and individuals are not required to hide characteristics of themselves. However, gender, race, spirituality, political affiliations, childlessness, and sexual orientation are just some of the personal characteristics that can lead to workplace mistreatment (Neault & Mondair, 2011) perpetrated by supervisors, co-workers, as well as customers (Shannon et al., 2007). Sadly, anti-workplace mistreatment policies and legislative measures have not impacted overall rates of workplace mistreatment (van Heugten, 2012). Nearly half of all US workers are either victims of mistreatment or witness mistreatment as a bystander (Lutgen-Sandvik & Fletcher, 2013). Despite all this data, between 72 and 88% of employers do not believe workplace mistreatment is an issue (Lassiter et al., 2021). With the high prevalence rate of workplace stress in the adult population, it is important for CareLine workers to understand how to help these individuals. This presentation discusses the current background of workplace stress in the US, the role of brief counseling-type interventions in assisting those experiencing workplace stress, and diversity considerations for CareLine workers talking with callers experiencing workplace stress.

Learning Objectives

  • Define workplace mistreatment and recognize prevalence rates and other background information on workplace mistreatment and workplace stress.
  • Identify resources to offer brief treatment interventions in assisting callers experiencing workplace mistreatment.
  • Identify resources to apply culturally relevant interventions for callers experiencing workplace mistreatment.
